The compound is also referred to as phosphoric acid triisobutyl ester or phosphoric acid, tris(2-methylpropyl) ester.

Chemically, the product belongs to the group of phosphate esters and specialty solvents/additives. Industrial production is typically carried out via esterification or transesterification of phosphorus-containing precursors with isobutanol or derivatives of isobutyl alcohol;
